Workshops at Judith M

  • Perfect for Beginners and Advanced Hat Makers. Learn from Master Milliner and Featured Milliner of the 150th Kentucky Derby Jenny Pfanenstiel, on how to make a hat from scratch using a technique that dates back over 100 years. You will understand the uses of the different hat blocks and be able see them up close.  Each person will learn the different types of straw for blocking and how they are best used.  You will learn how to wet and steam the straw to form it over a hat block to make a shape of a hat.  Choose from 100's of hats blocks of all different shapes and styles. We will be blocking both the crown and the brim separately.  Once dry, we will then hand sew the crown and brim together.  It will be finished with wiring on the brim, a sweatband in the crown and any embellishments one chooses.  Each person will walk away with a beautiful summer hat that they can wear with pride. Perfect for all genders. Straw materials for workshop are an additional cost based on the material one chooses. You can estimate between $70-$150. All other materials are included in the course’s cost: hat forms, rope, sizing, joiners, and wiring. I would like all attendees to bring embellishments, a sewing kit that includes needles, thread, pins, scissors, thimble, elastic, hammer, nails, tacks, pliers and a variety of thread colors, and a towel. Classes will start on Friday at 5:30pm and start on Saturday at 11:00am. Materials for this course can be purchased before, or on the first day of class. About Patty Gravatte
Multimedia artist, Patty Gravatte, established Gravatte Millinery in 2015 following a visit to Kentucky Derby 141. After embarking on the process of having a hat designed for the event, and following a lifelong love of hats, Patty’s passion for hats was reignited. Since that time, Patty has traveled France and Italy taking millinery classes from world class milliners, has explored multiple hat and flower making facilities, toured New York’s Garment District shops and the haberdasheries of Paris learning all aspects of the trade and process, collecting beautiful, fine quality materials along the way. Patty has worked as an apprentice with local milliners, practicing and perfecting her craft. What started as a hobby has turned into a successful small business. Patty says, “This medium allows me to use so many of my other artistic abilities, including color, texture, shape, beading and silk floral design, all in one place. It feels like the cumulation of years of artistry landing in the perfect format. I can use all those skills to make something beautiful which in turn brings out the beauty in the wearer. What a gift to be able to do this.” All Gravatte Millinery hats, headpieces and accessories are made by hand in Louisville, Kentucky following traditional millinery techniques including hand sculpting and sewing. Everything is made with high quality new and vintage millinery materials, sourced from around the world.
