Perfect for Beginners: Learn from Master Milliner and Featured Milliner of the 147th Kentucky Derby Jenny Pfanenstiel, on how to make a hat from scratch using a technique that dates back over 100 years. You will understand the uses of the different hat blocks, some dating back 100 years. Each person will learn the different types of felt for blocking and how they are best used. You will learn how to mold the felt to form it over a hat block to make a shape of a hat. We will be blocking both a crown and a brim out of felt. On the second day, we will wire the brim, add a lining, hand sew a sweatband into crown, then finish with a grosgrain crown band and bow. Each person will walk away with a beautiful felt hat that they can wear with pride. Classes will start on Friday: 2-6 and finish up on Saturday: 11-4. Materials for this course can be purchased before, or on the first day.
Experience Blocking is Needed: Come spend a few days in the new Judith M classroom and let the expanded assortment of antique hat blocks inspire you. With literally hundreds of shapes to choose from, you may be surprised where your creativity takes you! For this class, students will be able to block unlimited hats utilizing any material they purchase from the shop during class, or any materials brought from home. You are also invited to bring blocks from your personal inventory, if something you own has you “puzzled”. Also covered will be blocking on found objects, You will never look at your dinner plate the same way again! This is the all-you-can-eat-buffet of hat blocking workshops. In this 3 day course, you can expect to block anywhere from 2 - 12 hats, it’s up to you. Just wear something comfy, roll up those sleeve, and prepare to block your socks off!
