There's a Hat in There Somewhere

Instructor: Laura Hubka, Laura Hubka Millinery, Darrow Street Studios, Evanston IL.Ms. Hubka has studied millinery in New York and Chicago, and won the GenArt “Fresh Faces in Fashion” for accessory design in 2004. A member of Millinery Arts Alliance since 2003, and a guest instructor at the DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois.
Dates: July 18(Friday) and July 19 (Saturday)
Studio is open 9am - 4pm both days.
Cost: $175 (Cost of materials is not included in the workshop fee)Ms. Hubka will be teaching some not-necessarily-in-the-books fun things to do with the leftover pieces of straw hatbodies, sinamay and felt. Clever and unusual ways to use up and recycle the scraps that have been just waiting for a project. Such as forming a brim with seam binding, an iron, and wire. Double block multiple layers of straw, hand forming a brim with binding, an iron, and wire. Practice the art of free forming on a C crown (headblock) for draping with straw or felt. Try your hand at fashioning a whimsey or birdcage veil. Make elaborate flowers, leaves and other trims out of scraps. All of these ideas lend themselves to the popular fascinator or cocktail hat. This is an incomplete list of projects taught during this two-day course. Instructor Laura will cram in as much as students can handle and time allows. Blocking experience is required.
Have unfinished or problem projects? Bring them along and let us assist you in getting back on track. Many have inquired about private tutoring and although we are not offering an entirely one-on-one workshop, the staff will be available and ready to assist. And you will have the added bonus of working alongside fellow milliners, in a high energy and creative environment. Carry in your own materials to work with or, purchase from our stock. Participants should wear comfortable clothing that is washable. Student projects will vary.An added bonus of attending our classes is having access to the inventory at Judith M. One often finds special treasures while browsing the stock of hat supplies. Students receive a 12% discount on items purchased during class.
