Greetings!
Welcome to our first e-newsletter of the new year. We hope that 2009 will be generous and kind to you and bring you good fortune, prosperity and great happiness.
Hat Patterns are on a special sale from the manufacturer for the month of January. Since we are slow in announcing the sale we are extending it to the end of February.
The 2009 version of HatLife Directory is now available and we encourage all of our readers to purchase a copy. It has almost endless resources for hat makers. Many long time manufacturers and suppliers have closed their doors and in these trying economic times we need all the tricks we have at hand for finding new ones.
Need to find a place for wearing the great hat you worked on this winter? The Kentucky Derby is the perfect showcase for you. Now in its 135th year, the Derby is famous for its many attendees and their wonderful or wild hats. So head on down, grab a Mint Julep, stroll the paddock area, and drink in the many "oohs and ahs" your hat will generate.
There are many Racetracks and great hats are worn to all of them. If you cannot get to the Derby, look for other horse races near you. The Derby is in my "back yard" so it is the one I am most familiar with. All of the races bring their own kind of thrill and fun. They are an inexpensive outing and a great way to promote yourself and your hat-making skills.

Tradition of Hats at the Kentucky Derby
The second most entertaining parade on the first Saturday in May, next
to the Kentucky Derby post parade, is the parade of hats on display at
Churchill Downs. From the fantastic to the sublime, there are no rules
or limits. In the clubhouse and paddock, women of grace and taste sport
classy, fashionable styles. In the infield, the headwear has a zanier
character. Does a Derby hat improve one's luck at picking winners? Some
say, "yes, it certainly helps."
There are races all day long at Churchill Downs on May 1 (Kentucky Oaks) and May 2 (Kentucky Derby). General Admission Tickets are $25 and $40, gates open at 8 a.m. These tickets give you access to the infield and the First Floor Paddock area. I strongly suggest avoiding the infield as it tends to be a muddy and rowdy mass of humanity.
Derby Hat Contest
Each year, the Kentucky Derby Museum invites participants from around
the world to enter their beautiful and unique Derby hats in this annual
contest. A panel of judges and guests then rates the hats, with the
top twenty to thirty being selected for the 2009 Kentucky Derby
Museum's Derby Hat Exhibit. All types of hats,
designer and novelty in either men or ladies' styles are welcome to enter. Each winner will
receive a certificate of participation in the exhibit along with passes
to visit the exhibit during the year.
Check the website closer to May for printable entry forms.
