Judith M millinery supply house Newsletter

January 2008
Dear Friends,

Welcome to our first e-newsletter of the new year. We hope that 2008 will be generous and kind to you and bring you good fortune, prosperity and great happiness.

We also hope you will find the newsletter a useful tool in your hatmaking endeavors. The feature articles have links which allow you, the reader, to click and be taken to pages giving more detail on the subjects.

This month we have a guest writer for the HatHelp section. Milliner Susan Freese has been making hats for ten years and came up with a great tip for using a facial sauna machine to steam and prepare felt hatbodies for blocking.  If there are other topics you would like covered please email your suggestions to me. email: info@judithm.com

Flirty Fedora

We are running a special sale during the month of January on hat patterns by Pattern Studio. The Pattern Studio publishes a line of cut-n-sew hat patterns and all of their patterns are at 10% off this month. The photo at the left is of the popular Flirty Fedora pattern. The website shows the sale price of either $9 or $13.50 USD (regular price is $10 or $15). These patterns are created by Dee Atkinson and have clear, easy directions and offer several headsize adjustments. We carry her entire line of hat patterns and will be adding new ones as soon as they are in print. Ms. Atkinson also designs patterns for gloves (men's and women's) and handbags. To view and purchase these types of patterns please visit her website: Pattern Studio

Discontinued Hat Movie - CloseOuts

We are discontinuing some books, DVD & VHS titles and have listed them in the CloseOut section of our website. For the most part, these are readily available from other traditional sources and we choose to free up the space for other product. The documentary, "What Is It About Hats?" is one of the titles.

Remember to visit  the Close Outs Section on the website for other feathers, ribbons and hat deals. There  are some great striped hatband ribbons, pleated horsehair, denim berets and other inexpensive soft hats for quick, easy sales at your Spring shows.

USING A FACIAL SAUNA AS A SUBSTITUTE STEAMER

If you lack a traditional steamer for felt hat bodies, an inexpensive facial sauna can be used. Here is how:

· Fill the sauna with distilled water and plug in the electrical cord (or follow the directions that came with your sauna) .

· Dampen your felt by spritzing with room temperature water in a spray bottle.

· When the steam is going nicely, gather your hat body gently into a cone shape, wrong side out. Insert the hat body crown side down into the sauna (photo 1).Steam1

· Over the top of the sauna, place one or two inexpensive shower caps. Do not tape or band caps onto sauna as to avoid possible steam burns when removing the tape (photo 2). The felt cone must not touch the bottom of the sauna. Otherwise, the vent might mark the felt.

· When the reservoir goes dry, check the felt. Be careful, it will be hot. If the hat body is not moistened enough, add more water to the reservoir and repeat the steamingSteam2 if needed.

· Never leave the sauna unattended for long.

· Check the felt frequently.

· Remove the felt from the sauna and block it on your hat block as usual.

· This method should only be used for felts, not straws.

Happy Hat Making!

Susan Freese

Remember, all of our instructions are general in nature. You will need to experiment to find what works best for you in your hatmaking situation.

The "HatHelp" column will focus on a different millinery item or technique each issue and provide information on hints and how-to's relating to that issue's topic. Previous articles have dealt with hat veiling, stiffeners and sizing and working with wire. You may read our previous e-Newsletters in the Archive on the website. Newsletter Archive
Thank you for reading our newsletter and for your interest in or love of hats.  We delight in hearing what hats you are making or wearing and hope you will keep in touch.

To paraphrase Monty Python, "The problem with the world today,
There aren't enough people wearing hats."
